Knitting gauge calculator

Measure your swatch, then enter the gauge and the size you want. You get the stitches to cast on (rounded to your stitch pattern’s multiple) and the rows to work.

Counted across the measured width.

If the pattern says “multiple of 4 sts + 2”, enter 4 here and 2 below.

How we worked it out

Updated as you change the numbers.

  1. Stitches per inch = 20 ÷ 4 in = 5. Rows per inch = 28 ÷ 4 = 7.
  2. Stitches = 20 in × 5 = 100.
  3. Rounded: 100 stitches.
  4. Rows = 24 in × 7 = 168, rounded to 168.

Method and assumptions

Gauge is stitches and rows per measured width. Dividing by the width gives stitches and rows per inch, and multiplying by the finished size gives the counts. When the stitch pattern repeats over a set number of stitches, the cast-on is moved to the nearest count that fits the repeat, and the calculator shows the width that gives.

Tips

  • Measure gauge on a washed and blocked swatch at least 6 in wide, away from the edges.
  • Most patterns give length in inches rather than rows; the row count helps when charting or planning yarn.

Questions

How many stitches do I cast on for 20 in at 20 stitches per 4 in?

20 stitches per 4 in is 5 per inch, so 100 stitches. For a pattern worked over a multiple of 4 + 2, use 102 (20.4 in).
