Quilt binding calculator

Enter the quilt size and how wide you cut your binding strips. You get the number of strips to cut across the fabric and the yardage to buy.

2 1/4 to 2 1/2 in is common for double-fold binding.

About 40 to 42 in for quilting cotton after removing selvages.

About 10 to 12 in covers mitered corners and the final join.

How we worked it out

Updated as you change the numbers.

  1. Perimeter = 2 × (60 + 72) = 264 in, + 10 in extra = 274 in.
  2. Strips = 274 ÷ 40 in = 6.85, rounded up to 7.
  3. Fabric = 7 × 2.5 in = 17.5 in ÷ 36 = 0.486 yd, so buy 1/2 yd.

Method and assumptions

Binding goes once around the quilt, plus extra for the mitered corners and the final join. Strips are cut across the width of the fabric and joined end to end; the fabric needed is the number of strips times the strip width, rounded up to the nearest eighth of a yard.

Tips

  • Join strips with diagonal seams so the bulk spreads out.
  • Bias binding, for curved edges, takes more fabric; this calculator is for straight-grain strips.
