How we worked it out

Updated as you change the numbers.

  1. Split the plain stitches into as many groups as there are gaps (n + 1 when flat, n in the round) and spread any leftover stitches over the first groups.

Method and assumptions

Flat knitting puts plain stitches at both edges, so there is one more group than increases; in the round the groups close into a loop. M1 is any single increase (make one, kfb, yarn over) and k2tog any single decrease.

Questions

How do I increase 12 stitches evenly across 96?

Knit about 7 between increases: K8, then (M1, K7) 12 times with four of the sections as K8.
