Grout calculator

Grout fills the joints between tiles, so the amount depends on joint width, tile thickness and how many joints there are per square foot (smaller tiles need more).

Typical cement grout is about 1.8 to 2.0 g/cm³; check the bag’s coverage chart.

How we worked it out

Updated as you change the numbers.

  1. Joint volume = area × (tile width + length) ÷ (width × length) × joint width × tile thickness.
  2. Weight = volume × density, plus the waste allowance.
Tiles laid in a grid with a grout joint between themtile width + grout joint

Method and assumptions

Each tile has half a joint along each edge, so per unit area the joint length is (W + L) ÷ (W × L). Multiplying by joint width and depth gives the volume. This is the formula manufacturers’ coverage charts are built on.
