Discount calculator

Enter the price and the discount. Stores often stack a second discount on the sale price; that is not the same as adding the percentages, and this shows the real total.

Your answer

Sale price$60.00
You save$20.00

How we worked it out

Updated as you change the numbers.

  1. Sale price = price − discount; percent off = (price − sale) ÷ price.

Method and assumptions

A percent-off discount multiplies the price by (1 − the rate). A second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so 25% off then 20% off is 40% off in total, not 45%.

Questions

What is 25% off and then an extra 20% off?

40% off in total: 0.75 × 0.80 = 0.60 of the original price.
