Method and assumptions

New regime slabs for FY 2026-27: nil up to ₹4 lakh, then 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% for each further ₹4 lakh, and 30% above ₹24 lakh. Salaried people deduct a standard ₹75,000. A rebate under section 87A of up to ₹60,000 makes the tax nil when taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, with marginal relief just above that.

Old regime slabs: nil up to ₹2.5 lakh (₹3 lakh for senior citizens, ₹5 lakh for super seniors), 5% to ₹5 lakh, 20% to ₹10 lakh and 30% above, with a ₹50,000 standard deduction for salary and a rebate of up to ₹12,500 when taxable income is up to ₹5 lakh. Deductions such as 80C, 80D, HRA and home loan interest apply only here.

Surcharge applies above ₹50 lakh (10%), ₹1 crore (15%), ₹2 crore (25%) and, in the old regime only, ₹5 crore (37%), with marginal relief at each step. Health and Education Cess of 4% is added to tax plus surcharge.
