How we worked it out
Updated as you change the numbers.
- Area = length × width = 14 ft × 12 ft = 168 sq ft.
- With 10% extra: 168 × 1.1 = 184.8 sq ft.
- Boxes = 184.8 ÷ 20 sq ft per box = 9.24, rounded up to 10 boxes.
Method and assumptions
Flooring is sold by the box, and each box states the area it covers. The calculator adds your waste allowance to the floor area, divides by the box coverage and rounds up to whole boxes.
For an L-shaped or irregular room, split it into rectangles, add up their areas and use “I know the area”.
Tips
- Include closets and the floor under any appliances you plan to remove.
- Buy at least one extra box from the same production run for future repairs; the shade can change between runs.
- Let laminate and hardwood acclimate in the room for the time the manufacturer specifies before installing.
Questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Manufacturers commonly recommend 5 to 10% for a straight layout and 15% or more for diagonal or herringbone patterns. Rooms with many corners, doorways and closets need the higher end.
