How we worked it out
Updated as you change the numbers.
- Roll the 12 ft carpet both ways across the room; strips needed = room width ÷ roll width, rounded up, each the room length plus 3 in at each end. The cheaper direction is used.
Method and assumptions
Installers buy whole strips off the roll, so a 13 ft wide room uses two widths of 12 ft carpet unless it can be turned. Seams, pile direction and matching patterns can add more; get a measured quote for large jobs.
Questions
How much carpet for a 15 × 13 ft room?
About 35.3 sq yd from a 12 ft roll: the room is 21.7 sq yd, but it needs two widths of carpet whichever way it runs.
